JOHN F. KENNEDY and DEAN RUSK His Presidential signature on the appointment of Samuel Rosenbaum to the Advisory Committee on the Arts (National Cultural Center) in November 1961, counter-signed by Secretary of State Dean Rusk. Ironically, the Center would be named in Kennedy's honor after his death. Civil Appointment signed: "John F. Kennedy" as President, 1 page, 22½x18¾. Also signed: "Dean Rusk" as Secretary of State. Washington, D.C., 1961 November 14. Appointment of Samuel Rosenbaum of Pennsylvania as a Member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts (National Cultural Center), to serve at the pleasure of the President. Embossed paper seal intact at lower left. In 1958, President Eisenhower signed bi-partisan legislation authorizing creation of a National Cultural Center in Washington. The Center was to be privately funded and self-sustaining, and to present a variety of classical and contemporary artistic performances while also fulfilling an educational mission. President JOHN F. KENNEDY, a lifelong advocate of the arts, embraced the project, working to attract private funding. After JFK's assassination, Congress voted $23 million in funding for a center, now to be called the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, a living memorial to the President on the banks of the Potomac. The Center held its first public performance on September 8, 1971, the debut of Leonard Bernstein's "Requiem Mass" in tribute to the slain President. The Kennedy Center became, in the words of the New York Times, "a gigantic marble temple to music, dance and drama." Samuel Rosenbaum, a Philadelphia attorney, was a trustee of the Philadelphia Orchestra prior to receiving this Presidential appointment. DEAN RUSK (1909-1994) was Secretary of State throughout the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Only Cordell Hull served in the office longer than Secretary Rusk. Lightly...
